INTRODUCTION
The band that would be East of the Equator began quietly with three guys playing acoustic guitar in the front room of an apartment on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Soon it was obvious that something was lacking. Through a friend Mike, Erik, and Ric were introduced to Chad Channing, formerly of Nirvana who had recently broken up his band, The Methodists. Eager for a new project, Chad jumped on board, but something was still missing. In December of 2001 Erik contacted Travis through a singer available ad in The Stranger, a local Seattle newspaper. After hearing the project, Travis joined the band and the rock quintet East of the Equator came to life.
Currently in the final stages of completing their debut album “Technology Nursery,” East of the Equator plans on releasing their album in October 2004 on their own label Dinnertime Records. The album was finished in March 2004 at Soundhouse Studios in Seattle, Washington with veteran producer/engineer Jack Endino. Endino is known for producing talented acts worldwide, including his most successful record to date, Bleach by Nirvana. The first session for the album was completed last year at Greenhouse Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia. Pat “Sajack” Sharman, whose work includes Nickelback’s “Silver Side Up,” produced the session. East of the Equator is currently booking local and regional shows starting June 2004 in support of “Technology Nursery.”
So what’s the key to the music? "It's like a magic formula," says rhythm guitarist Erik East, "put together 5 hard-working talented guys and you get nothing short of something that will truly rock." Consisting of vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, bass, and drums, the band is fronted by Travis North who splits his time between Seattle University and being the singer for the band. North has an undeniably clean rock voice and presence. He has performed in venues ranging from choir recitals to national anthems at professional sporting events. Chad Channing is the drummer of East of the Equator who has performed in many legendary Northwest bands including Nirvana, The Methodists, and The Fire Ants. The bass player, Mike West, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Seattle, and also produces music for a living. Erik East, the rhythm guitarist, is a former junior tennis champion. The lead guitarist of the band is Ric Autumn. Autumn, a veteran of the rock business spent the late 1970s touring in his rock band called Autumn.
East of the Equator is driven to make great rock albums and entertain audiences across the globe. The band also hopes to soon sign to a larger label for better support due to their high growing demand. In the last year alone, the website www.eastoftheequator.net has received over 300,000 hits. “If you’re a fan of alternative rock you have to hear East of the Equator,” says Blender magazine.
